How I met the saint
I spent a year and a half at Thabarwa Meditation Centre under the guidance of Sayadaw Ashin Ottamasara, observing and documenting the profound impact of his selfless work. Thabarwa’s Thanlyin village stands as one of his most ambitious and compassionate projects—home to three hospitals, residences for over 3,000 elderly and solitary individuals, and a sanctuary for more than 500 monks and nuns. It’s more than a monastery; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem of service. Within its grounds, you’ll find a dental clinic, physiotherapy studio, food bank and countless other facilities essential to sustaining both a monastic community and a place of refuge. Every corner of Thabarwa reflects Sayadaw’s unwavering commitment to compassion without boundaries.
